Porters Birth Story

Yes, Im alive and well! And even though I am not due for another 2 weeks I have a sweet baby boy in my arms! I can't even believe I have a baby! So crazy and so amazing! So here's how it went down...

Matt and I went on a baby-moon on April 25th to a hot springs resort a couple hours away. I remember thinking "wow, soon we are going to be parents and this is going to be our last outing alone together." Boy was I right. We got home thursday afternoon and were busy getting ready for matt's family to visit for the weekend. I started having some cramps and just assumed they were braxton hicks. They became more painful as the night went on but I told myself there is no way I am in labor, he's not due for another 3 weeks! Friday I called into work and said I was not coming in cause I was up all night in pain. Friday we ran some errands and I tried to be a good sport since matt's family was here. Friday night same thing, but the cramps got worse. I called the birth center and they basically said that if I was in labor it's best to labor at home as long as possible. I still didn't think I was in labor. The contractions were all over the place and not consistent. Anyways come saturday I was in PAIN!! So at 5 pm we decided we would go in and just check to see if I was even dilated. I told myself to not get my hopes up but I said if I was only dilated to a 1 I was going to murder someone.

So the nurse put monitors on me and checked and said I was dilated to a ...... 5!!! Yes a 5!! I was in shock! I was halfway there! The rest went so fast it almost seems like a blur. I called my mom and told her they were admitting me! She freaked out and booked a flight for the next morning! They admitted me to my room and asked if I wanted an epidural. Duh, that wasn't even a question! I was super nervous for the epidural because I am not a fan of needles but it was probably the best part of the whole thing! After that I figured I would just sleep for a couple hours and relax but no. The dr. came in and broke my water and checked me and I was at an 8! My epidural was not quite working on my left side so I asked if I could get more meds cause the contractions were starting to get painful again. The nurse said yes but Ill just have the dr. check you one more time before we give you more. The dr. came in and checked me and instantly said okay you need to push! WHAT!?! I started freaking out! This was really happening! So before I knew it I was pushing and pushing and pushing and those 20 minutes were harder than I had ever imagined. The dr. had to use a vacuum because baby was not very happy so I pushed one last time and poof! A sweet baby boy started crying! It was so surreal and amazing I can't quite describe it. I looked at Matt and we both had tears in our eyes.

Our sweet baby boy weighed 5 lbs. 15 oz and was 19 inches long. Even though he was so tiny he did a doozy on my cha cha but I'll stop there! He has big hands and feet but the rest of him is so tiny. For being 3 weeks early he was as healthy as could be and I could not be more grateful! I just need to fatten him up so he fits into his newborn clothes!!!

We had lots of family and friends come to visit and we feel so loved. My mom got in the next morning and has been with me all week. She has been a life saver and I'm gonna die when she leaves! Thank goodness for moms right!? This little guy has turned my whole world around. Its a big adjustment, harder than I thought but more amazing than I could have ever imagined. Right now I feel like the milk cow but once we get that down we will be set. I love my little boy.

But uhh, you're way lucky you only pushed for 20 minutes?!! I did for over 2 hrs!! But my little guy was bigger-which is crazy mine was 3 weeks early and weighed a whole pound more. Porter is so tiny but so cute! Congrats and after about 2 weeks of nursing it gets better I promise! Just hang in there! Mother hood is a bumpy ride but the best ever! Im so happy for you! Enjoy the little guy! Boys are so much fun!
